contact with media
The media is the direct link between our program and the fans who support it. They paint the picture of our program that the public eye sees. It is important that you present yourself in a manner and style that will reflect the desired image.
Be courteous, cooperate fully, and consider the following:
-
Be confident, but not boastful
-
Be a positive promoter of our athletic program.
-
Praise, don’t criticize.
-
Do not say anything that would help our opponents or end up on their bulletin board.
-
Think carefully about what to say. If you are in a situation when you haven’t had time to think; then say as little as possible.
-
Remember that any comment made in the presence of a member of the media whether in a direct interview or not, may show up in the paper. (There is no “Off the Record”)
-
Be sure to understand the value of poise and restraint under highly emotional conditions.
-
Many questions are pointed in such a manner to elicit a certain response. Try to see through these and don’t get caught in controversy.
-
Response or reactions to possible positions on controversial subjects require careful consideration to avoid misunderstandings and subsequent problems. Know all of the ramifications before you get involved in controversy.
-
Never answer a question that you do not wish to. Follow the ABC’s.A – I can’t comment on that.B. – But what I can tell you.C. – “Whatever message you want to get across.”
-
Never allow yourself to be interviewed by telephone unless you know who you are talking to and the interview has been prearranged.
